Step-by-Step Guide
Select Your Image
In your Figma canvas, click the image you want to upscale. The image can be a photo, screenshot, logo, or any raster graphic.
Pro tip: Check the current resolution first. If your image is already high-res (e.g., 3000px+), upscaling may not provide visible improvement.
Open AuraFx Plugin
Right-click on the selected image → Plugins → AuraFx
Or use the keyboard shortcut (if you've set one up in Figma preferences).
Choose Upscale Option
In the AuraFx panel, scroll to find:
- •AI Upscale 2x — doubles resolution (500px → 1000px)
- •AI Upscale 4x — quadruples resolution (500px → 2000px)
Click the button for your desired upscale level.
Wait for Processing
AuraFx sends your image to Google Gemini AI for enhancement. This typically takes 2-5 seconds.
Note: Larger images (4x upscaling) may take slightly longer than 2x upscaling.
Review & Accept
AuraFx shows a before/after comparison. Use the slider to compare the original vs upscaled version.
- →Accept if you're happy with the result
- →Reject if you want to keep the original
Once accepted, the upscaled image replaces your selection in the Figma canvas.
2x vs 4x: Which to Choose?
Use 2x Upscale When:
- You need moderate resolution improvement
- Output is for web or mobile screens
- You want faster processing (2-3 seconds)
- Starting image is already decent quality
Use 4x Upscale When:
- You need maximum quality for print
- Starting image is very low resolution
- Output needs to be billboard-sized
- Creating high-DPI (Retina) assets
Best Practices
Start with the Best Source Possible
AI upscaling works best when you start with a reasonable source. A 100px thumbnail won't magically become a perfect 4K image. Aim for at least 500px as your starting point.
Use Action Chaining for Workflows
Combine upscaling with other effects: Remove BG → Upscale 4x → Add Shadow for complete product photo enhancement in one click.
Batch Process Product Catalogs
Need to upscale 50 product images? Select them all and run AI Upscale once. AuraFx processes them sequentially.
Check Resolution in Figma
After upscaling, select the image and check the W × H dimensions in the right sidebar to confirm the new resolution.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Upscaling Already High-Res Images
If your image is already 3000px+, upscaling won't add meaningful detail. Save your API calls for truly low-res images.
Expecting Miracles from Tiny Sources
A 50px favicon won't become a sharp poster. AI is powerful, but it can't invent detail that was never captured.
Not Comparing Before/After
Always use the comparison slider. Sometimes 2x is enough, and 4x might introduce unnecessary softness.
